It’s time to take a road trip on historic Route 66, where reader AB toured a vision of America’s past — with the help of a four-legged tour guide:
My husband and I had the opportunity to visit Red Oak II near Carthage, Missouri. The artist Lowell Davis recreated the halcyon days of his small town youth by moving structures from his home town. Our tour guide was a friendly pup who walked us to each cute building before proudly escorting us to the gift shop. Outside the gift shop is a dog house with the likeness of our guide.
Be sure to buy something…I’m still making payments on the house.
I hope they sell magnets of the dog house it would be the perfect souvenir!

Yes! I always get magnets when I go to museums and whatnot. It’s an inexpensive souvenir that doesn’t take up a lot of space. Though my fridge was getting a bit crowded so I moved them to the back of my front door a few months ago.

Sadly I didn’t see one, but they have lots of plates and figurines if you like those. There might have been some other magnets. I got some buttons, including one with a cute dog and one with a little mouse.
Lowell’s wife runs the gift shop and has the tiniest black.and white pup. There are also birds on site, including a white peacock.
Absolutely amazing place! Worth a few hours drive for sure!

My ex grew up in Carthage and we once made the obligatory pilgimage to the Precious Moments chapel. I still use that site with its stained glass windows and Michaelangelo-esque ceiling frescos to encourage “what is art?” discussions in my classes.
