Distantly related to the sea urchin, the barnacle-like creature found clinging to rocks, is its lesser-known cousin the land urchin.
It’s Mr. Pokee, from sender-inner Andrew Y.

I love Mr. Pokee!
I feel duty bound to point out land urchins were named first. Urchin is the older English name for a hedgehog, dating at least as far back as the Middle Ages. Whoever first named sea urchins borrowed the name.
Any one celebrating Solstice today? Raise your paws!
Me! and my urchin friends, too …
(My favorite CO post of all time.)
Yes! I’m celebrating by sleeping extra hard!
Happy Solstice!
There’s an adorable hedgehog in The Once and Future King, variously referred to as “urchin” and “hedgepig” as well as hedgehog. T. H. White knew his medieval bestiary (in fact, he wrote one).
THANK YOU! I’ve been cudgeling my brains for that reference to no avail. I could not remember which book I read it in, lo these many years ago. You have saved me a sleepless night.
I know weird things. Glad I could help!
Urchin is a MUCH better name for a hedgehog.
Happiest hedge ever.
