Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the Caturday open thread! Today reader Georgiana Y. shares her beautiful cats Storm and Skye:

I thought maybe you would enjoy a photo of Storm being an elegant void lounging on the chair and one of curious Skye wondering why I’m taking a photo of Storm and not one of herself because she’s much cuter.

I’m photogenic!

Usually I don’t have time to get a photo when either one of them do something cute but that day I saw Storm sitting in the chair looking regal so I grabbed my phone and managed to get a nice photo then I saw Skye looking up at me and I just had time to get a shot of her looking confused before she just walked away.

This week we got over 30 cm or about a foot of snow on Thursday and they predict another 30 to 35 cm for tomorrow, that’s it I’m officially fed-up with winter!

Hope everyone is safe and warm and as a nice weekend.

    • Kar February 15, 2025 / 12:17 pm

How do you NOT boop Skye’s one all day?

      What a sweet face!

There’s something about black cats, the ones I’ve had showed the kind of gravitas that Morgan Freeman bankrolls.

Ugh., snow. That would paralyze the city where I live. We struggle with a couple of inches.

      Stay warm!

    • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:23 pm

Thank you for sharing your darlings! Just wanted I needed to brighten my morning!

It’s snowing here too. I kinda wish Mike would turn off the snow here, but it’s fun to watch a few flakes drift down slowly.

    Happy Caturday Everyone!
Georgiana, the girls are so beautiful. Lovely to see them here this morning. Sorry for your winter woes.
I had the day off yesterday because of the Eagles victory parade. I work a block from the Parade route and I was relieved they gave us the day off. I watched some of it online and it was just a sea of people. Apologies to anyone who is a Chiefs fan or just hates the Eagles, but I am so happy the Eagles won. This has been a good thing for Philadelphia. I’m not a sports fan, but when Philly is happy, it is wonderful. There are no politics, no religion, or racism, there is only One Philly. I wish it were so easy to unite the country. I don’t live too far from the art museum either (end of the parade route), so there were crowds of people walking down my block all afternoon in Eagles green.
Today I’m going to Stitch & Bitch after I pick up my poor Kenmore sewing machine. It was my Christmas gift first year of college in 1992. A plastic gear broke during Covid and when the other machine I was using seized up last month, I took the Kenmore to my local shop to get it fixed. He’s been in business for 75 years (inherited from his father) so I believe him when he says he looked high and low for the part and couldn’t get it. Very sad. But all is not lost – I have an amazing co-worker whose hobby is 3D printing. I’ve asked him about maybe trying to print the gear and he said, “Challenge accepted!” I have wonderful coworkers. Wish us luck!

    • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:22 pm

Ooooo! 3D printing would be awesome for that! Good luck👍🏼

    • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:24 pm

It’s lovely to see a city/region come together. Enjoy the happiness.

  3. AJ February 15, 2025 / 9:42 am

Gorgeous kitties! And both are extremely photogenic. Good luck with the gear part Tara, depending on how intricate it is, your co worker should be able to get you one. Heck, they’re 3-D printing houses so a gear should be no problem. so sorry about your weather and snow woes. That is a lot! We finally had significant rain this week, about 2 inches, but we’re drying out over the weekend. I just feel bad for the people north of us in LA. First fires, now floods and mudslides.

Off to Lego Club this afternoon, after buying hubby the Lego set of his choice. I think I have enough extra cash to get him the Star Wars one he’s been drooling over. It’s the Sand Barge set, should keep him occupied for a while, almost 4000 pieces. Then errands tomorrow, and off to the park and museums for me. I’m also going to try my hand at sketching/drawing while I’m at the park. The refurbished Botanical Building is calling to me and I think it’d be a good subject for a more abstract style of picture. You know the type, a few slashes of brown for the building some blu for sky, and green for the trees. Wish me luck! Happy weekend all!

    • Tara February 15, 2025 / 9:51 am

Thanks AJ – I totally agree! They can print some of the craziest things, a little gear should be a cinch… hope those aren’t famous last words.

    • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:25 pm

That sounds like to much fun! I have fond memories of California parks.

  4. allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 10:52 am

Good morning, Storm and Skye. (Hey, Skye, I love your goth lipstick!)

Had a hard time getting out of bed this morning but here I am. Getting a bit of a headache, though. They’re predicting snow this afternoon starting around 1pm, but it’s supposed to turn to rain/snow mix around 5 and then just rain around 7 so hopefully I won’t have to do any shoveling or clean off my car.

Not much going on, but the dogs were good. (Don’t understand how that bunny got in there but whatevs.) Love David and his dog-soliciting letter. 🥰

    • allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 11:15 am

One of the comments on the video says “I’m starting to suspect the dogs are good every week but will need to keep watching to be sure.” I suspect they may be right, but I, too, will keep watching.

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 15, 2025 / 11:43 am

They’re all good dogs (Brent)! 😉

        • allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 11:44 am

          😘

    • allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 12:04 pm

      And I just saw this!

One super-sweet dog getting groomed and also Angel the super-matted dog helped raise a ton of money for the Niagara SPCA.

      • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:37 pm

Gorgeous girl. And such fantastic news about the fundraising.

      • Tara February 15, 2025 / 5:02 pm

Aww – she is so sweet! Amazing how much was raised for Angel!

    • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:36 pm

I saw the bunny-eared dog earlier this week. HOW is that possible? Dachshund ears don’t stand up on their own. Hairspray? Stiffening compound? Liquid nails? I need info!!
Again, with the break-in shooting, we don’t deserve dogs! What a wonderful companion💙 So glad the guy was caught! Throw the book at him😠

    • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:46 pm

Fantastic as always. I peeked at some of the dogs in yesterday’s email, and I love seeing them again.

Also I’m proud that I now remember NOT TO TAKE A DRINK while I’m watching these videos. A few uncomfortable snorting incidents have finally sunk in to my brain!

And I love that bunny so much.

    • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:49 pm

Black Jack is hysterical. Both ears flipped over and in perfect TV viewing position!

    • Tara February 15, 2025 / 4:46 pm

Maybe the bunny is a Chiweenie? (Chihuahua Dachshund mix) My neighbor has one and she is the cutest thing. Her hears don’t do that though.

  5. Duckie 🐥 February 15, 2025 / 11:43 am

Greetings to all my fellow peeps.
It has been a most crazy week in Duckieville. Cold arctic winds. Snow finally turning to rain today. Duckie went a full seven days with no eggs and I’m hoping that’s it. Oldest niece is in pre-labour (baby has dropped, niece is nesting, but no actual labour yet). I’m sewing baby blankets like there’s no tomorrow. Nephew who moved to northern Alberta last year sending out wedding invites. He commented to his mom last week that he missed grass and dirt, so I popped two little baggies of grass and dirt into the mail, and I’m waiting for his response. I start his wedding present quilt next. Unless we’ve been kept in the dark, dad has gone nine days without a nosebleed. Older sister making plans to move in with parents if her husband accepts a job in Alberta, until parents are no longer in need of help. (This will be a HUGE relief to me if that happens. The moving in part, not the not needing help part.) I got my good news about my health situation. And we are THIS close to paying off our line of credit. Our tax refund will do the rest.
Tara, you’ve given me an idea. I’m going to see if I can get someone to do a 3D image of Duckie for me. Thank you.
    Off to play with fabric.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

    • Alice Shortcake February 15, 2025 / 12:37 pm

Duckie, I hope your little baggies of grass and dirt don’t suffer damage in the post and end up being scrutinized by Homeland Security. “Well, it looks like soil to me but we’d better check it for anthrax. And the grass has a kinda guilty invasive look to it.”

Action on the Idiot Neighbour front: yesterday he removed the slats from the back of my trellis, built a seperate fence on his side of the wall, then ruined the good work by using an electric hedge trimmer to remove excess ivy from the back of the trellis. He chopped through the stems of several long strands, so I’ll just have to wait a few days to see how much old-established vegetation he’s killed off!

      • allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 12:50 pm

        WTF?

        • Alice Shortcake February 15, 2025 / 12:59 pm

My response exactly. I’m hoping that they bought the house as an investment opportunity and don’t intend to live there!

        • Duckie 🐥 February 15, 2025 / 1:03 pm

          What Allein said!

        • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:26 pm

          Same here.

        • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:40 pm

Man obvy has a problem with ivy! Glad he built his own fence tho!

          • Alice Shortcake February 15, 2025 / 2:18 pm

I just hope the mess he’s caused (property damage? Perhaps even trespass?) is serious enough for me to demand at least enough compensation to cover the cost of the solicitor.

In other news, a recent liver biopsy has confirmed that I have Autoimmune Hepatitus. Apparently drugs are available to replace the steroids I’m on at the moment, which is a big relief as my late father put on a massive amount of weight when he was on steroids for a long time.

            • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 2:40 pm

Alice, we’re crossing our paws for you on both fronts.

            • Georgiana February 15, 2025 / 2:58 pm

              What DEBG said.

            • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 3:12 pm

Ooo, I’ve heard steroids can make you gain weight so I’m glad they have something else for you. And crossing my fingers that all goes okay with the stupid neighbor!

            • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 15, 2025 / 3:15 pm

Sending encouragement on the neighbor front and best wishes for renewed health. Bibi adds puppy kisses!

            • Tara February 15, 2025 / 4:50 pm

Alice – sending strength to you! I hope you can stick it to the neighbor! He’d deserve it.
Glad to hear there is medication to help the autoimmune hepatitis. I hope that keeps you in the clear.

              • Alice Shortcake February 16, 2025 / 4:21 pm

                Thanks, all!

    • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:26 pm

Great to hear your positive news, Duckie!

    • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:43 pm

Love the grass and dirt bags!😆 And glad Duckie has stopped laying eggs! (Knock on wood)
I love that you are making a wedding quilt💙

    • Tara February 15, 2025 / 4:48 pm

Duckie – please send Mike pictures when you have!

  6. allein 🐾 February 15, 2025 / 12:50 pm

  7. 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:19 pm

Both kitties are highly cute! But take pic of one, you gotta get the other, too!

  8. DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:30 pm

Love seeing these gorgeous girls today!

I’ve had a busy morning, pulling up the carpet in Lavender’s closet so I can install vinyl planks tomorrow. It’s not a big closet; removal took less time than a load of laundry. I sprayed everything lightly with Nature’s Miracle to hopefully remove all bad smells–she had peed so much in some spots, the carpet padding was soaked through. None of the cats are happy that I’ve moved stuff around. Maybe it’s a good day to finally rearrange furniture in the living room, so they can get through all the sulks at once.

    Hugs to you all.

    • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 1:45 pm

Definitely get rid of all the sulks at once! Are you going to put down pee pads for Lavender’s closet?

      • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 1:49 pm

Now that I’ve moved her litter box out of the closet, we’ll have to see if they’re needed. She’s using her box for solids. It smelled so strong in that closet, I couldn’t tell where she was peeing.

Sorry–TMI! I’m just relieved that all the cats seem to be finally settling down with the new arrangements. As recently as last weekend, I feared Lavender might need a new home. They now seem to be slowly slowly getting better with each other. Very slowly.

        • 6rabbits. February 15, 2025 / 3:16 pm

Hey, slowly is better than not at all! Do you have elevated places where they can jump? That would give Lavender the ability to watch and get used to the others. Find a Jackson Galaxy video on YouTube that discusses these issues. He is the BEST!

          • Debg February 15, 2025 / 4:10 pm

            He really is.

Lav has taken over the closet and main bathroom off my bedroom. There’s now a zipper screen on the bathroom door. She crawls under it, so she gets lots of mom time when I work from home (in the bedroom) or sleep. That’s what upset the boys—they also want the bedroom, though they’ve got the rest of the condo under their control. She’s lived here for 1.5 years, but we’ve still got issues.

    • Tara February 15, 2025 / 4:56 pm

DebG I’m so sorry it’s been such a difficult adjustment for Lavender. It’s heartbreaking. That’s why I can’t get attached, never mind try to adopt Squirt. Jacques HAAAAATES him. He is furious hisses and growling and running back inside when he sees Squirt. 😢 Why can’t they just understand that we love them all?!I hope the vinyl work goes as smoothly as the carpet-tearing-out.

      • DEBG February 15, 2025 / 8:22 pm

Jacques, like my Scorpius, wants things the way he wants them.

Hope Squirt is doing well. Any luck on your friend adopting him?
