Weekend Open Thread

It’s another beautiful Caturday and reader Georgiana Y. shares this peaceful scene:

Skye and Storm are really enjoying having the patio door open so they can sniff all the nice smells and watch the birdies and squirrels in the back yard now that the weather is finally cooperating. I just love how they sit up with their front legs resting on the door frame with their noses pressed against the screen.

Two cats viewed from behind as they look through a screen door
I got dibs on that plump robin.

Hello everyone, it’s been really nice this week so Skye and Storm have enjoyed long days of sitting in front of the patio door watching the goings on in the backyard. They also alternate with sitting in the front windows for a change of scenery.

I’m still feeding the outdoor cat but I don’t leave food out at night anymore because I found traces that a racoon had come around to eat it.

Skye and Storm don’t seem to mind when the outdoor cat is eating just on the other side of the patio door and show no aggression at all, Minnie would have been spitting and hissing her little heart out LOL!

    Happy Caturday every one!

Good morning, Skye and Storm. Looks like a perfect day for kitties.

Last night we were under a tornado watch but if there was a storm I slept through it. It’s sunny now and the clouds are clearing, but the ground is wet so obviously it rained recently. My window screens are done, but one of the windows had another issue and wouldn’t stay open by itself. My dad did something but it’s not done yet. I have to work this weekend.

I stopped at the store on my way home from work yesterday and on the way there I saw a woman walking a doggie with wheels! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in real life before. I think it was a dachshund. The back legs were just hanging and he had a little diaper on, so I’m guessing he’s paralyzed. Didn’t stop him from zooming down the sidewalk.

    The dogs were…well, you know.

It was fun to see some familiar pups this week!

Folks, it’s worth watching the entire instagram video of the dog who made a hole in the wall. I saw it last night and laughed myself silly.

Weather update: the hourly forecast says there is “light rain” right now…it is absolutely pouring. And kinda windy. I was going to take a shower; maybe I should just go for a walk…

Good Morning. Skye and Storm have wonderful front row seats! And they look very comfy.
It turns out I have a pretty serious leak in the corner of my bedroom. When I looked at it from above, it seems the downspout has shifted in its socket (?) and I can see that part of it is now under the mansard. So – water is just gushing in under the roof. Fabulous. It dripped onto the hamper which is okay. I just need to wash everything and find something to put under that corner to catch the water until I can get someone to check it. Of course this happens at 12:30am Saturday night, right? sigh.
The good news is I picked the first bowl of raspberries last evening. A whole cup!

Always a pleasure to see the lovely Skye and Storm. I hope the robin survives their death stares.

      Wonderful cat stories!

I still have issues listening to that good news girl. She doesn’t talk quite as fast in her recent videos, but the. jump. cuts. and. stilted. phrases. still annoy me. She sounds a bit more natural now, but still awkward and almost AI-like. (Maybe it is AI) Maybe that is normal speech patterns for tik-tok and shorts, neither of which I watch.

Awesome idea about the crochet cat hats. So glad that this is helping cats and that they seem to be okay with it. And while neither TGNG nor another video gave credit to the source material, I did find an article that does give credit to the source video: https://www.popsci.com/technology/cat-hat-science/

And here is the tutorial, if any of you would like to crochet your own cat hats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNlTWoCF5hY

“cat, hat, in French, Chat Chapeau” (Cat in the Hat tv cartoon from a loooong time ago)

In Spanish, you’re a gato in a sombrero.

I, too, dislike the vocal sound of these videos and many others. Some (I think not the Good News ones, but can’t be sure) are artificially voiced; others are artificially sped up. It’s a style used in many videos, and I’m darned if I know why this choice was made, other than (perhaps) squeezing a few more words per second. But the good news is good news, so I tolerate it (more or less).

It took me a while to get used to Girl With the Dogs, as well. Now I don’t think twice about her vocal presentation.

Jump cutting is also a an editing choice I think is overused, but alas, nobody asked me!

Ooh, raspberries! We used to have raspberry bushes in the backyard when I was a kid. We never got a whole lot from them but we would get to eat a fresh handful here and there during the summer.

No cute animals but this made me happy.

    • Tara May 31, 2025 / 11:51 am

oh this made me happy too! I love these guys.

Allein – I got 10lbs of raspberries last year. 🤣 I made jam.

I would love to shove my nose against the window to watch robins, but unfortunately all the bird food I put out ends up being eaten by fat aggressive pigeons.

Well, I had the eye surgery on Thursday and it seems to have been successful. My appointment was for 7.30 but I knew from previous experience that EVERYONE in the waiting room had probably been given the same time, so I wasn’t surprised at the ensuing three and a half hour wait! I opted for local rather than general anaesthetic to avoid an overnight stay, and although the operation (shortening a tiny muscle) wasn’t quite as gruelling as I expected it lasted well over an hour. Of course my left eye was held open throughout, so I had a lovely view of the instruments and sutures. Much to my amusement the surgeon occasionally sang along to classic rock playing quietly in the background – I particularly enjoyed his rendition of The Who’s “Squeezebox”. I wasn’t given an eyepatch and the only problem I’ve had so far has been ungluing my eyelid in the morning!

    • DEBG May 31, 2025 / 11:55 am

Alice, I’m glad everything went so well! Eye surgery gives you a whole new perspective, doesn’t it? I still remember my Lasik surgery in 2011.

    • Georgiana May 31, 2025 / 2:23 pm

I’m glad everything went fine. with the operation. When I had the cataract surgery on my right eye they put a sheet over me with a hole over the eye that was to be operated on and that eye was dilated so much I didn’t see anything.

      • Alice Shortcake May 31, 2025 / 4:19 pm

There were a few moments when everything went out of focus and I was treated to a psychedelic light show. Sadly they didn’t coincide with a Jimi Hendrix track…

        • Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 1, 2025 / 6:09 pm

          I’m just glad you’re okay.

    • 6Rabbits June 1, 2025 / 12:04 am

I took my uncle (75) to get both eyes with cataracts done last month. Two visits a week apart. He did have a patch just the first day. He said it is amazing how much better he sees now!
Glad all was okay for you👍🏼

  7. AJ May 31, 2025 / 11:56 am

Aww such sweet and cute kitty cats they are. My two have also been enjoying the nicer weather we’ve been having and the fact that I can leave doors open. They had a blast running onto the patio last week and barking at my neighbor’s workers, lol.

Warm Saturday here and I have a solo weekend as hubby is off visiting his brother in FL. Off to the farmer’s market now, then the library, and possibly some shopping. I’ll see how tired I get. Later I have a few ideas for paintings and I’ll figure out which one to start. Tomorrow I’m off to the thrift store and maybe yard work depending on how hot it is. Enjoy the weekend all!!!!

  8. Duckie 🐥 May 31, 2025 / 11:56 am

It’s a beautiful cool day here in Duckieville, and I am glad.
Little Duckie laid 1.5 eggs this week. Or maybe just one. The first egg had no outside, and the second egg had no inside.
I saw the dentist yesterday and I swear I can feel each spot where she put the 🤬 needle in.
I have entered a period of enforced waiting. Waiting on hubby’s job, younger sister’s finances, nephew getting married, nephew getting engaged, hubby’s DTC, Duckie’s health, dad’s health, mom’s health, hubby’s health, my health. Nothing specific happening, we’re all just waiting.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Happy Caturday, everyone! And double for our beautiful spokescats–who have the right idea about enjoying life. They’re so sweet.

I head off in a little bit for my haircut. Since it’s been 6 weeks, my stylist will be getting lots of news, from losing Sevi to the sale of my company to the Dutch owner. I’ve been teasing since January about big news for the company, and now I can finally do the big reveal. Schacht’s website got a new home page with the news too. Nobody can back out now!!

My order of new dyeing supplies gets delivered today. I’m excited to try ice dyeing some yarn with special “splits”. The results on finished fabric are stunning.

      Very cool looking!

Happy Caturday! This has been an eventful week. I’ve had laryngitis which meant a couple of days off school, but… I managed to celebrate my 60th birthday (actually in January) with dinner on the iconic Vienna ferris wheel! Now I’m grading like a wild woman, hoping to finish this challenging school year strong. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, y’all!

    • DEBG May 31, 2025 / 12:24 pm

Sorry about the laryngitis, and the grading, but congrats on the belated celebration!

    • 6Rabbits June 1, 2025 / 12:08 am

I hated grading! I taught 4th so I can’t imagine how stressing it is at your level.

The little search suggestion bar in Windows 11 has informed me that today is World Parrot Day. So here are some funny parrots.

    • DEBG May 31, 2025 / 2:45 pm

That is fantastic! I love those birbs!

    • Duckie 🐥 May 31, 2025 / 3:30 pm

I laughed till I cried. Tiny but fierce.

    • 6Rabbits June 1, 2025 / 12:10 am

      What great birbs!

      • Alice Shortcake June 1, 2025 / 2:20 am

I love the ruff deployment/hysterical screaming!

        • 6Rabbits June 1, 2025 / 10:06 am

I know! At first I couldn’t figure out WHO was screaming!😆 Like how the one bird just scooted over from the other before anything happened!
