Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday, and welcome to the open thread. Today’s visitor loves to wrassle!

An orange striped kitten lies on its back with its mouth slightly open to reveal small teeth. A human hand is touching the kitten's mouth.
Does I has teefs yet?

Hello Cutetropolians, it’s been another rollercoaster week here sorry for the long post.

First BIL is still in the hospital, he’s making progress but is not ready to come out yet.

Second my husband had his operation on Tuesday, it was supposed to be a one day thing but he had complications and he had to stay the night and part of the next day. He’s fine but has to have a catheter and bag until October 8th.

Finally if you remember last Saturday I said Skye broke her two upper canine teeth, the first vet we saw said the teeth had to come out and that the infection was probably already starting and the 2 estimates for the procedure we received from that clinic were both over $1000 and made no sense, some things we one price one one of them but another price on the other one, I got mad and called another vet.

We saw the new vet yesterday, he is an independent not associated with a company or group of vet and guess what the teeth don’t have to come out!! He said since she has no pain and is eating and acting normal just leave them. He said it was a cash grab from the other vet. He is definitely our new vet!

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

I hate vets (and human doctors/dentists) that seem to make up estimates not based on what is necessary for the patient but what their income goal is for the week or what new toy they want for the office. I stopped going to one dentist because of all the work they said I needed, adding up to thousands even with my insurance plus wanted me in for cleanings every 3-4 months. And it was a big office, multiple dentists, hygenists, best equipment, etc. Found a new dentist, single practice, tiny office in what looks like an apartment building. Exam, xrays, teeth cleaning, everything looks good, see you in six months. In and out in 45 minutes, no extra fees. It pays to shop around.

Same here! But I never put “big business” together with “overpriced service.” Thank you for naming that. My logic would be that because they are bigger they can offer lower prices. Shows how faulty my logic is – pinko commie that I am. 🤣

Sorry to hear about complications for hubby. I’m sure he is looking forward to getting rid of that catheter. Wishing him and BIL continued good healing!

I’m glad you managed to find an independent vet, Georgiana. I had read recently that many vet practices have been forced to/or have decided to join a large group that is really pushing unnecessary tests and procedures onto their customers.

Unfortunately, over-priced services from vet clinics aren’t new. I had a similar experience with vet clinics years ago: one “well-known” clinic quoted a very high price for surgery, a price I couldn’t afford at the time. I found another vet, a smaller one, and their price was more reasonable. Stayed with that clinic until I moved away from the city.

Sending virtual hugs and positive thoughts for your BIL and your husband. And you!

Sending good wishes for all your family, hoomin and feline.

So tiny, so fierce!! I’m quaking in my shoes over here. Such a beautiful kitty, and I call matchingkins with the floor.

I am so glad this week is over!!!!! Had a mailing to send out which involved printing over 100 reports, each different, then stuffing the envelopes. For most of the week, it was open file, print, close, repeat, and repeat, and repeat, etc. I’m going to talk to my boss about some changes for next year. We have to find a better way. And then Wed, someone comes by with about 70 checks at 3 pm that I needed to log and copy. To top it off, yesterday I got call from the library where I take painting classes saying since you didn’t call back to confirm, we’ve given your seat to someone on the waiting list. Wait, what????? The earlier message reminding me said nothing about confirming! Just call back if you’re not attending. So called and explained, they put me on hold, came back and said sorry can’t switch it back. Arrrrrghghhh!!!!!! Let them know, the person leaving the message needs to be more specific if they want people to call back and confirm. No matter, I’m still going. Usually people don’t show up so there’s available spots. Just a frustrating end to the week.

Sunday is the big car show that hubby attends. This year will be the first year with his new special edition Mustang and he has gone all out. I’m trying so hard to be supportive but my inner self is kinda rolling eyes and hand to forehand, shaking my head. His car has a Star Wars Mandalorian theme. So he ordered custom t-shirts, and a poster listing the car’s features, all with that theme. Think, “This is the Way”, “I Have Spoken” and he’s calling his “car club” (just us 2 for now) the Hyperstang Clan. Heavy sigh. Hey, it’s a hobby, and at least he’s not at bars or doing anything illegal. Like the astronaut’s wives in the movie Apollo 13 say to the press after the launch, “I’m happy, thrilled, and so proud!”

Somewhere amongst all this fun, I have to find time to do laundry, get groceries, and clean. There’s so much dog fur floating around, I could probably make whole dog, lol.

    Have a great weekend all!

I’m laughing at the eyeball rolling and hand to forehead, but I also kind of love the people who get so passionate about such things! I hope you have a wonderful time tomorrow.

      • Duckie 🐥 October 4, 2025 / 12:24 pm

I’ve been rolling my eyes so much recently that my eyebrows are developing biceps.

        • AJ October 4, 2025 / 1:16 pm

Between hubby and his passion projects plus some of my co-workers, I think me & you, Duckie, could start the eyebrow olympics. Events could include eye rolling, eyebrow raising, furroughed brow, etc. Extra points for looks of incredulity, sneers, disdain, and maintaining a straight face against all odds.

The Marmalade Mauler is seen here training for his big match with the Abyssinian Assassin!

Sorry to hear about the cash-grabbing vets and dentists. I’ve had experience with both and I’m sure a LOT of unnecessary work gets done.

Regulars may remember that I recently underwent a bone density scan. I got the results today – there is evidence of osteoporosis in my lower spine and osteopenia (bone thinning) in my hip. As I’ll be on steroids, albeit at a reduced rate, for some time, a Biophosphonate has been prescribed to counter the side-effects of steroids. Honestly, I’ve had more use out of the NHS during the past ten months than in my entire life!

    • Tara October 4, 2025 / 10:25 am

Oh dear, sorry about your bone density scans. I hope the new medication helps!

    • AJ October 4, 2025 / 1:19 pm

Stay well Alice! And here’s to your bones thickening up. I’ve heard good things about light weight resistance helping to build bone density.

      • DEBG October 4, 2025 / 9:39 pm

Same here. The trainer whose videos I collect says strength training is the most important exercise for us ladies of a certain age.

Hope the new meds help, Alice.

    Kitty has such beautiful eyes!

It’s a beautiful day in Philadelphia. I bought a pair of pants at a little community fair a few weeks ago. I need to alter them slightly to fit better, so I think I’ll do that today.

We had an interesting week at casa Tara. On Tuesday afternoon my tenant texted for me to check the security cameras. An important package had been “delivered” but was not there. (The important package was months of design work, two trips to India to manufacture four prototypes of her freelance work. She is a fashion designer – just left Anthropology). DHL notified her and literally one minute later, someone with a duffle bag came onto the porch and took the package. We have time stamps from DHL and the camera. So I printed out two posters with images of the porch pirate and taped them to my front porch directly under the camera. Would you believe the porch pirate came back the next day and took the posters down?! So I designed a new poster, thanking the Porch Pirate for coming back and letting her know we have even better images of her now. 🤣 My tenant had immediately filed a police report and we were able to add to that file. I also let our RCO (Registered Community Organization) leader know. She has another contact at the police department and has forwarded all of it to him. Last night I cleaned the windows so they are crystal clear and I’ll put the posters up again. Maybe she’ll come back again and we’ll get super images of her. The saddest part is that my tenant won’t get her work back. To this ding-a-ling it probably just looks like clothes from amazon and isn’t a big deal. My tenant is understandably devastated. I feel so bad for her.

I’m going to putter today, cooking, cleaning, gardening, and pants.

    • AJ October 4, 2025 / 1:33 pm

I’m so sorry for your tenant. All that hard work. I really hate porch pirates. They should take all that energy being used to steal and get a legit job. Hopefully your tenant can get more prototypes made and shipped. Depending on which carrier is being used, maybe she could send it to something like an Amazon locker, or have it held at the courier’s office for pickup.

    • DEBG October 4, 2025 / 9:51 pm

So sorry for your tenant–maybe the porch pirate will get caught and the items returned?

Happy Caturday…I have a headache and I have to work tomorrow. We’re doing my birthday dinner tonight and I’m having a hard time working up any enthusiasm.

Prince’s little face is so sweet I’d let him steal whatever he wants.

    • 6Rabbits October 4, 2025 / 9:04 pm

That front-flip zebra!😳 Saw it earlier this week and have now watched 6 times!😆

      • allein 🐾 October 4, 2025 / 9:08 pm

I know! I can’t decide if he did it on purpose or not…

My parents were watching some police show on the Law & Crime channel and they were responding to a circus trailer that caught fire. The trailer had I think four camels and four zebras in it. They were all fine but they had to keep them from trying to run off; apparently one of the zebras got loose for a bit. They were trying to contact local farmers to see if anyone had some horse trailers they could borrow.

    • DEBG October 4, 2025 / 9:50 pm

      Hope you’re feeling better, Allein.

Oh these pups! And zebra! And baby koala! And fat bear!

      • allein 🐾 October 4, 2025 / 9:54 pm

Thanks; not totally but better than I was this morning. I went to my parents’ house and ended up taking a sorta-nap on the couch (not totally sure if I actually slept…). Going to get ready for bed a little early.

  6. Duckie 🐥 October 4, 2025 / 11:46 am

Not so happy Caturday. I have caught the mother of all colds, and it has decided to settle in for the fall. It’s bad enough that my specialists are discussing taking me off my immunosuppressant meds to let my body properly fight it, but that will mean a week of excruciating pain all over. I’m not sure which I’d choose.
On a more cheerful note, hubby and I are going to look at three properties tomorrow! The first one is ten acres, and the least expensive, but it is near electrical towers, and I am sensitive to them. We’re going to park at the edge of the property and I’ll get out and see how I feel. The other two are five acres each, and more expensive, but are in a safer location, and they have little lakes on them! They are also side by side, and we are discussing just getting both. Oooh, please please PLEASE let us win the lottery!
Darling orange single brain cell with no teefs, you are absolutely adorable. You can come and wrassle with me anytime.
Try to have a good weekend, everyone, and stay safe.

    • Duckie 🐥 October 4, 2025 / 12:51 pm

Technically we won the lottery. We won a free play.

    • AJ October 4, 2025 / 1:23 pm

Oooh, congrats on the possible property purchase. Any of them sound great. Hope you feel better. Colds are a great excuse to sit around wrapped in a blanket and watch gameshows or trashy tv. If you nod off, no big deal as those shows usually have no intense plot to follow.

    • DEBG October 4, 2025 / 9:45 pm

So sorry about the cold, Duckie. Hurry up and give it to someone else so it leaves you alone!

  7. DEBG October 4, 2025 / 9:44 pm

Love one-brain-cell gingers with a fierce! Especially the kittens!

I’m finally catching up after our big spinning and weaving festival. It was a ton of work to prepare, and on Monday I’ll have to help process a gazillion orders (we were selling things), but today was really fun. I taught a few kids how to weave, and a few adults, and got to talk weaving and spinning all day with other passionate fiber folks. My bad foot with plantar fasciitis did pretty well, though I’m staying off it for the rest of the evening and I’m getting groceries delivered tomorrow.

    Hugs to you all.
