Weekend Open Thread

The chat room has a festive fall feel for today’s Caturday open thread. However, that garland will probably get knocked to the floor within a week.

Happy Caturday! That garland might last longer than this afternoon considering it is attached with tacks or somesuch item. Difficulty level 2/10. And pretty kitty already has one paw up to give it a try.

I have a long 4 day weekend!! So need a break, the time change has totally thrown off my brain and body. Still trying to get adjusted. Up today is breakfast at my favorite little hole-in-the-wall restaurant followed by a haircut, then off to the pottery sale at the park. Twice a year, all the artisans at Spanish Village (fancy name for a outdoor mall-type area of cottage workshops https://villageartscenter.org/ ) throw open their doors and set up tables in the common area to show off their wares. So much pottery from so many talented people plus paintings, and jewelry, and metalworking, and hand blown glass, and more. I have to restrain myself from buying out the place. The best part is they have a sale table where their slightly wonky items (think size is off, glaze may be not the right color, or has some pitting) are highly discounted. Great place to do the holiday shopping.

Tomorrow is errands, and maybe some thrift shopping, and celebrating with an early birthday dinner. Monday is my birthday and we’re off to Los Angeles for a pop-up event called the Mustang Experience. It sounds like one of those immersive events like what was done with Monet, you walk through rooms where pictures are projected on every surface. Plus they’ll have some famous movie cars to drool over, lol. Tuesday is a who knows, do whatever day. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

That craft fair sounds like so much fun. I love handmade pottery but it’s a bad thing to collect in my 4-cat household.

Happy Caturday! I was gonna go get my blood work done today but they’re only open until 10 and that’s just not happening. I’m off Friday so I will go then. I have to do chores. And find the printout for my bloodwork order….

The dogs were shod again this week.

I do not need to spend $65 on a sweater…

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom November 8, 2025 / 11:51 am

FWIW, that’s a knock-off. Proceeds wouldn’t go to the 15/10 Foundation. The sweater is cute, but I couldn’t bring myself to buy TYDISH merch unless ordering from https://weratedogs.com. I keep trying, but my fave color in the zip hoodie sells out too fast for me to snag one. Guess I’m not the only one who likes dark green! I do have a an official TYDISH cap, in maroon.

      • DEBG November 8, 2025 / 12:16 pm

It’s actually not. TYDISH send out a sneak peek email and they’re selling this sweater from their site.

      • allein 🐾 November 8, 2025 / 12:16 pm

It’s not; it’s just not available to everyone yet. They sent a “VIP” link in their email this morning.

        • Ricky & Bibi's Mom November 8, 2025 / 3:45 pm

          I sit happily corrected!

I have seen knockoffs on Etsy and eBay. VERY glad to learn this isn’t one! And now I realize I should have clicked on the picture; I’d have seen the We Rate Dogs FavIcon. You live and learn …

          And now I’ve subscribed.

          • DEBG November 8, 2025 / 7:55 pm

You’ll get a sweet dog every day–it will make you smile!

            • Ricky & Bibi's Mom November 8, 2025 / 9:13 pm

              Yay!

              • allein 🐾 November 8, 2025 / 9:16 pm

The pictures have hovertexts which often add extra amusement, too. (Though I don’t know if you can see them on a phone. If so, I can’t figure out how…)

I too noticed the upraised paw of Garland Cat, although it’s possible that he/she is already training for the great Christmas Tree Ascent of 2025.

I had a comedy of errors situation last Tuesday afternoon. At 2.40 I was waiting at home for a phone appointment with a hepatology doctor at the local hospital. Nothing happened! Also at 2.40 said doctor was waiting for me to turn up in person. Nothing happened! It turns out that the confusion was caused by an administrative errror, so the appointment was rescheduled for next week.

Despite having a terrible hacking cough I watched the local primary school’s firework display last night. A short walk further down the footpath is St Peter’s, a school that doesn’t celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night…because he was a pupil there! It’s rather odd that of all the Gunpowder Plot conspirators only Fawkes’ name means much to the average person. In fact he was a fairly minor player but had the bad luck to be caught with a large amount of gunpowder in a vault underneath Parliament.

    • DEBG November 8, 2025 / 12:20 pm

I didn’t realize Guy Fawkes came from your neck of the woods! Or at least went to school there. The Gunpowder Plot and the defeat of the Spanish Armada were the big events cementing England’s identity as an Anglican state, at least so far as the royalty were concerned. All that anti-Catholic propaganda made Fawkes a household name.

There’s a reason Dumbledore’s phoenix had that (hilarious) name.

Hope your cold is going away. Those hacking coughs are awful.

I’m lurking because I got Covid and it’s bad, I’ll be back when I feel better.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom November 8, 2025 / 11:52 am

Get well soon, Alice and Georgiana! And heal fast, Duckie!

      • DEBG November 8, 2025 / 12:21 pm

Ditto. Hope everybody feels better soon.

    Good Saturday morning, everyone.
In a bit less stress since BIL managed to pass his second driver’s test. He’s back to full time, but is under scrutiny, as the person who took on his shifts had some pretty negative reports to make. Still, for now, we’re relieved.
I’m almost recovered from a minor fall I had in September. Minor in height, but major in problems. My chiropractor has put three ribs back in place often enough that they are finally staying where they belong.
Family health is not so good, but there’s nothing we can really do about it.
The chat room does look fall-ish today. That garlands looks like it will be made to fall any minute now, as soon as we stop looking.
Little puppy Drax needs a hamster wheel.
Alice and Georgiana, feel better soon.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

Hi Duckie! Do you still want me to try to get that duck flannel and bring it to you? I’ll be up there on Nov 22nd. Just let me know exactly what you want, and how much. You can contact me at soccersue525@msn.com.

Happy Caturday to everyone, and especially today’s mascot. It’s good to be prepared for anything that might need whapping.

I’ve been lazing about this morning and need to get started on today’s tasks. My SIL’s new woven scarf needs the finishing touches, and then I can finally ship it and my brother’s knitted hat. It’s fun to fulfill their requests for handmade yarn stuff: both of them chose the colors, then said “surprise me!” I hope they like the final results.

Also have to weigh, measure, and record a whole bunch of handspun. It’s a Ravelry kind of day, and then I can reclaim some space on my kitchen island. I’ll post some links later in case anybody wants to see what I’ve made.

Hugs and good health to you all!

      • Duckie 🐥 November 8, 2025 / 3:54 pm

        Deb, those are GORGEOUS!

        • DEBG November 8, 2025 / 7:56 pm

Thank you. Both combine a handspun yarn with a commercial yarn. I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

      • sedro6 November 8, 2025 / 8:54 pm

        Lovely green on the scarf!

Had massive Saturday event at work today. We acquired a suddenly defunct local University’s Archives (and so much more) this summer, and today was the big EVENT to show off what we have received and also why it belongs in our institution. It went very well, but I’m exhausted. Started at 9am today setting up. Then, half an hour before we opened – CEO says – “oh but this, and, oh but that”. HooBoy! – thank goodness we got fed, ’cause, I was in serious hangry mode. The rest of the event went very well. I’m so glad.
Wishing good health to those who need it!
Sending good thoughts to you all –
