For today’s open thread we welcome the very dapper Squirt, a stray cat who posed for pictures while getting neutered for re-release. But the process left him a bit disheveled, notes reader Tara O.:
He is so adorable, but I wonder who was in charge of painting his tux. They made a mess! My guess is they were either “in training,” drunk, or ran out of paint. I mean, they only manage one white eye brow. Sloppy craftsmanship if you ask me. But it’s not his fault. Poor dear. He was given extra sweetness for his personality.

Oooh, so very handsome!
Kinda quiet weekend planned. Breakfast out this morning then need to go buy a white elephant gift for our Lego club meeting. That means braving the mall, and hopefully it won’t be too crowded. Later on is my painting class and then I’ll probably just putter around the house, maybe do some gardening. Got my flu shot yesterday so feeling a little tired and not wanting to much of anything. Hope everyone has a good weekend!
I love cats with mismatched or wonky whiskers!
Friends, there is nothing inherently cute about either massive vegetables or English eccentrics. Also, neither of them are animals. But the YouTube algorithm presented me with this gem and I couldn’t resist sharing it:
I’ve never been more impressed by a matching jacket and hat!
That jacket and hat reminds me of what my mother used to dress me in as a child back in the 60’s LOL!
I will never again complain that the cabbages at the grocery store are too big. (I’m always looking for ones on the smaller side that I might actually get through before they go bad. They used to sell these little organic red cabbages that were about the size of a softball and they were perfect for a week of salads but I haven’t seen them in quite a while.)
But the cabbages are indeed too big at the grocery store!
I know! I did find a reasonably small one last week. It’s hit or miss.
Oh, my gosh! This is my new favorite personality! Thank you for sharing Alice. I definitely want the jacket – the hat is perfection. And yes, gosh, that is a gorgeous “red” cabbage.
For all the accent professors, is he from Cornwall?
I’m only guessing, since being certain would require me to put in at least a few days’s worth of research. FWIW, this lovely man mentions Malvern, which is in Worcestershire, in England’s West Midlands. Traditional rural Worcestershire accents are rhotic—that is, final R and R followed by a consonant sound are pronounced, as they are (R) in most (not all!) US and Irish speech, to give just two examples.
Traditional Cornwall speech is also rhotic, as is the speech in most of England’s Southwest. So your question is based on a good foundation.
I wish it were easier to find small cabbages. The one I have taking up space in my fridge could make haluski for a small army. Maybe it serves me right for ordering online instead of going to a store or two myself. But I do find shopping for one to be more and more of a challenge. It’s not that I want to waste food; it’s that it’s difficult to avoid if I want to cook from scratch.
That’s simply adorable. What does one even do with that much red cabbage?
Steve Hartman picked up the story of Francine.

How cares if his tuxedo is not perfect Squirt is still very handsome!
I’m sure they were just going for a trendy asymmetrical look. (I dunno, I’m not trendy, but it works for him.)
I overslept and I have a headache. I need to do laundry.
The dogs (and not-dogs) were good again. I want to play the Mouse bedtime game (to be clear, Mouse is a dog, not a not-dog).
Check out this cat chair.
Nice if you have more than one cat and they don’t share chairs, but I think I would miss the joy of lap time.
Quiet weekend here. Weather is rather grumbly today, with periods of rain and not-raining-but-going-to-rain-as-soon-as-you-step-outside. It’s even warm outside, which totally destroys the mood for this time of year.
Poor Squirt. Come live with me, and I will help you forget all your troubles.
Our strata council is hugely annoyed with a grub problem in our yard. Actually, the problem is everywhere in town. It can’t be treated until spring, so we have to wait and watch as marauding bands of very fat raccoons dig up our property and become even fatter. Council is so frustrated that yesterday they asked if anyone knew a good exorcist!
Have a good weekend, everyone.
Does anyone else follow Morty the Misfit? He got a new roommate!
She seems to be settling in just fine..
And has taken on the role of guard dog.
Awww – she’s adorable. Everybody better watch out now – she’s on alert. Good Girl.
Happy Caturday! Squirt is such a handsome boy!
Last night, hubby and I went to a show with the Seattle Symphony playing along to The Muppet Christmas Carol movie. I’d never seen a movie with symphony accompaniment (and had never seen the Seattle Symphony or been to Benaroya Hall, where they play), and now I’m afraid I’m never going to be able to watch the movie WITHOUT the symphony accompanying it. It was just amazing! And pretty close to sold out in a theater that holds almost 2,500 people. They have another showing today and again on Sunday, too.
We put up our smaller tree last weekend, and Julius has been mostly uninterested, so yesterday I put up the big (9 foot) tree, but I’m not going to decorate it until tomorrow. He hasn’t been very interested in this one, either, so I think I’m going to luck out. He has so many trees around our property and our neighbors,’ he probably isn’t that impressed with these since they don’t smell like the forest, and are harder to climb. 😛
grrr, just wrote a long comment and then duckduckgo crashed on me. So here’s the bullet points:
1. Squirt has moved in with my tenant. He’s apparently still nervous. So we’ll see. I hope he wasn’t supposed to be with us. 😢
2. Ran errands on bicycle today and checked out the new extenstion of the Schuylkill Trail which runs along the Schuylkill river (pronounced Skoo-kul – because Philadelphia). It is beautiful and I’m looking forward to it being finished, then one can ride from Philly to Valley Forge without having to ride on a road.
3. Making chicken soup with the leftovers – I love the smell of chopped onions, carrots and celery. While that’s simmering I’m going to keep decorating.
I hope you all have a cozy afternoon/evening planned.
I’ve wondered about the pronunciation of Schuylkill since I first came across it in my great-great-grandfather’s will. He emigrated to Philadelphia with his wife and several adult children, and most of the family are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetary.
Squirt is adorable. Congratulations, Tara!
