Weekend Open Thread

We have a special treat for today’s open thread, as reader Susan H. shares these delightful photos of Julius playing hide-and-seek with a deer friend:

He loves to hide in ferns, and as you can see, they provide excellent camouflage (“cat-mouflage”).

A pattern of light brown fern leaves. Hidden within them is the face of a cat, whose light orange markings nearly match the leaves and make him difficult to see.
I am een-VEE-zee-buhls!

He also likes to hide from the deer, usually with less success.

A deer stands and looks at a cat, who is trying to hide behind a small bush.
Dude, I can totally see you.
An orange cat sits indoors, looking away from a slightly open door. Seen through the glass of the door is a deer looking at the cat.
Mom, can Steve stay for lunch?

He’s definitely not a lap cat, but he does have his moments. When I posted this one to Facebook, I titled it “On today’s episode of Orange and Jobless…”

A sleeping cat rests his head on a pillow.
Hey, being cute is a full-time job.

Orange Julius is wonderful, and such a handsome boi! That last pic had me cracking up. So blissful! So relaxed! Definitely the deep sleep of a one brain cell with no worries.

Busy weekend here. First a friend is coming over to pick up some extra stuff I had after reorganizing the house. Off to breakfast after that, then Lego club meeting this afternoon. Tomorrow is my craft workshop at the museum followed by a walk around the Japanese Garden to see if the cherry blossoms are in bloom. We’ve had a lot of rain this week so the show might be starting. Fingers crossed we have a decent bloom this year. Last year they flowered for maybe about 2 weeks then we had storms come in that dropped all the blossoms. And to top off the weekend, I have to call in tomorrow night to see if I have to report for jury duty on Monday. 😕😒😒😡 Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Your weekends always sound so lovely! Remind me–the Japanese Gardens you visit are at the Huntingdon Library in Pasadena? I used to visit it often.

The gardens I visit are in Balboa Park in San Diego. I get their annual park-wide pass that gets you into almost all the museums and the garden. I’m up there at least twice a month.

Interestingly enough, I had the opportunity to go to the Pasadena gardens a few weeks ago with one of the museums but had to pass on it, at $200, ir was a little out of my budget.

Happy Caturday! Not much going on. Expecting snow tomorrow into Monday. Hoping it closes work; I will still have to work from home but at least it leaves me no question as to whether I should drive anywhere.

    The dogs were good.

Also… random Andrew Cotter video I came across this week…

Charming and funny, with Olive and Mabel imayerging fir a brief moment.

Indeed. I love that wry wit. And those wonderful pups.

The dog who has trouble waking up = my spirit animal. Such wonderful, happy, inspiring stories this week.

I was yawning just watching that part.

I love the photo of Julius lurking behind a very small bush. It reminds me of the baby elephant hiding behind a telegraph pole.

Not much to report from the Shortcakery other than that my re-imagining of “Peter Pan” (the play version) is almost finished, and the shop at the end of Shortcake Street has been sold after standing empty for months. When I moved here it was a flower shop, then it became an eco-friendly/refill shop. I live in one of the most densely-populated suburbs of York so I’m hoping for something useful, preferably a small bakery!

Three cheers for OJ and his invisibility! The single orange neuron strikes again…

Had a busy day planned but my sinuses decided to act up instead so I’m stuck at home with a headache and fever. Sigh. Of course Nikolai Devinovich and Ekaterina Velikaya have decided that I’m home on their account, so they’re being really Extra today. Hopefully their Orange Zaniness gives me some energy, before I snooze off like Mr OJ!

Sorry you’re under the weather. Hopefully the cats will curl up with you for a nap.

    Lurking grumpily.

      Me too 😖

Julius is such a sweetheart 🙂

These photos of Julius are wonderful! Especially that complete abandon and trust in the last one. What a joy he must be.

I just had the door bell rung by the religious people, bless their hearts. Didn’t realize it until I got down there. I know they are well meaning so I try to be kind and friendly when I turn them away. They don’t mean any harm, and who knows? Maybe it was “someone” telling me to get my act in gear for the day. 😆 Message received.

I’m trying to plan the weekend around the next storm which is supposed to come in tomorrow. I need to drive to school and drop off and pick up materials. I do not want to do that in the snow, so it will be today. I’m looking at my Ottolenghi cookbooks too. If we have a snow day Monday it will be the perfect day to cook something complicated. If the grocery stores aren’t a mess, maybe I can stop by on my way home.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Orange Julius makes me so happy, especially his “hiding” from the deer. Alice Shortcake is right that it’s like a heffalump trying to hide behind a telephone pole.

I’m about to head out for a breakfast/hair cut/errands run. Then it’s another weekend of trying to finish some weaving projects before I warp the loom for a new one. I’ve also got Melt the ICE hats to knit from some handspun, hand-dyed, or otherwise special leftovers in my stash.

Hugs to you all, and a special kiss to Julius who is so very orange.

Julius thanks you all for the compliments. 🙂 He’s quite the character and always makes us laugh. He’ll hide behind things and then jump out at me when I walk by. Last week when we emptied our old fridge to get ready for the new one, I put a large ice pack on the island counter, and he spent 5 minutes studying it, pawing at it, etc. Then he stood up, took a step backward, and fell off the counter. All I could see was big eyes, and his front paws sliding down the countertop. We’ve decided he’s not actually dumb- I’ve taught him several tricks- just very, very accident prone. I don’t think there’s a single surface in our house that he hasn’t fallen off of at this point.

LOL! I can relate to Julius on so many levels.

I LOVE the photos. They have a real Enchanted Forest vibe to them.
