Weekend Open Thread

Play ball! Baseball season is almost here, and Candi G. shares her avid Seattle Mariners fans Griffey (L) and Ichi (R) having a conference on the pitcher’s mound:

Two cats sit on either side of a semicircle shaped cat scratching toy. They are both wearing shirts bearing the logo of Seattle Mariners baseball team
If it’s baseball season, why can’t we hunt them?

    Hello everyone,

Griffey and Ichi are cute enough that they could make me interested in baseball.

Last week we had warm temperatures so all the snow melted, then last Wednesday we had freezing rain and lots of people lost electricity thank goodness not us, then last night it started snowing so this morning everything is white and covered in inches of snow.

I think Mother Nature is having a nervous breakdown, here are the weather prediction for the next few days:

    Saturday 1 C / 34 F snow
    Sunday -1 C / 28 F snow and rain
    Monday 13 C / 55 F rain
    Tuesday -2 C / 28 F snow and rain

And so on for the whole week!

That’s it, I’m going back to bed, wake me up in May!

Tuesday and Wednesday were in the upper 70s, Thursday it snowed (but didn’t stick much), and Friday was not freezing but still cold (40s, I guess) and very windy. It’s sunny and 45 now, today’s high is supposed to be 50.

Nervous breakdown indeed. 74F today, then 38F tomorrow. It’s warm here more often than not, and we’ve had lots of fire weather warnings because of the high winds and low humidity.

I know absolutely nothing about baseball or any other sport but I’m all in favour of feline fans and participants.

It’s been a good week at the Shortcakery. My new permanent partial denture is a vast improvement on the temporary one, the excrutiatingly prolonged work on my roof was finished this morning, and I found out that the basic state pension will be increased in May!

In other news, this is the time of year when the new theatre seasons are announced. I’ve booked for Opera North’s “Eugene Onegin” and “Tristan und Isolde”, Northern Ballet’s “Cinderella”, and the Sheffield Crucible Theatre’s “King Lear” with Ian McDiarmid in the title role. At 81 McDiarmid must be one of the oldest actors ever to play Lear on stage! I’m also looking forward to seeing Kenneth Branagh in “The Tempest” at Stratford in June.

Oh, this looks like it was a secret strategy meeting and they were interrupted! Such beautiful kitties though – thanks for sending them in!

Georgiana – we’re having the same nonsense weather here too. It was in the mid 80s(F) on Wednesday. I was outside gardening and sweating. Thursday I was bundled up inside and it was snowing 42F. It’s just bananas.

I’m visiting a long-time-no-see friend this afternoon. Our paths don’t cross much anymore and I want to hang out.

Then back to my taxes. Good grief. I’m never skipping a year again! (I filed extensions – I just couldn’t get them done last year). I’m finally done with 2024, and am working through 2025.

Hope everyone has a nice day today!

Such handsome bois and they look like bruisers who could win any game.

I’m with you Georgiana on the weather, we’ve been having wild swings too. Up in the 90s F for a few days, then dropping to the low 70s F , then back to the upper 80s/90s again. At least we don’t have the snow storms to add to the craziness. I’m getting to the point, I don’t know what to wear! Ooh, Alice those shows sound fantastic. And congrats on all your good news. It’s been a banner week at the Shortcakery.

Nothing much going on here, breakfast out and later our Lego club meeting. I’m getting somewhat frustrated as I haven’t been able to build anything lately with my sore hand. I also tried painting last week and didn’t do too bad but I felt it later. Been to one specialist who’s now sending me to hand surgeon to get her opinion. It seems besides arthritis, and tendonitis in the hand, I have the carpel tunnel nerve and another nerve that are irritated and “trapped”. We’ll see what the surgeon says. Tomorrow I need to go shopping for some swim shorts plus some slippers for my cruise in May. Considering how wild weather has been this year, I’m still figuring out what to pack. I may just do like the Victorians, psck everything and show up with a gazillion trunks and bags, lol. Have a good weekend everyone!

Inasmuch as I am a baseball fan (which is not much), I root for the Yankees, but we have a family friend whose grandson was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers last year and is currently playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. I still think the kitties are cuter.

I actually have stuff going on this weekend. I had yesterday off and had lunch with my friend who I hadn’t seen in a while. Then we went to the mall and saw a little doxie in a green hoodie, so that was worth a trip to the mall (she had a gift card so we went to Cheesecake Factory, which is attached to, but not inside, the mall). Bath & Body Works also had a sale so I got some of their aromatherapy body wash (Eucalyptus Spearmint, which is my favorite, Lavender Vanilla, and just Eucalyptus) since they were buy two get one free (or buy three get three free but I felt that was a little excessive since I don’t go through them all that quickly). Later today I’m going to my parents’ to do my taxes, and tomorrow is my brother’s birthday so we are going to dinner. I was going to do taxes last night but I got there and realized my W-2 was not in the folder, and then my dad’s computer started to shut down (it’s on a timer) so I said I’d come back.

    Speaking of doggies…

  6. Ricky & Bibi's Mom March 14, 2026 / 10:37 am

My late cats Mookie & Mazzilli would have approved of the very appealing Griffey and Ichi. Bibi sends a welcoming wuff.

The weather here has been equally nuts. We were back below freezing yesterday, after several lovely days of spring. Apparently we even had snow flurries the day before, though I missed them.

Yay for good weeks at the Shortcakery!

According to my notes (which I stopped keeping in the late 80s-early 90s), I saw Hal Holbrook as Lear, though I’ve no recollection of the production. I seem to have seen a Belgian adaptation as well. I do remember seeing Ian McKellen as Lear. And Olivier in the Granada television production. And I’ve seen a couple in regional and off-off-Broadway productions. I hope McDiarmid proves worthy of the role.

  7. Duckie 🐥 March 14, 2026 / 11:41 am

Griffey and Ichi both have such charming noses, I can’t decide which I like more.
It’s a grumpy day in Duckieville. Weather is not helping, as everyone seems to be experiencing. After being indoors all week with a delicate post norovirus stomach, I want to get out, but will the weather cooperate? NOOOOO! We’re going to have a pineapple express all week!
A little good news: we got our tax refund. Now we can pay down a few debts and put aside enough for property taxes in June.
Will be starting up my crafts again. I’m going to redo all our bedding colours, and hopefully even repaint the bedroom walls. I also want to play with resin this spring/summer. And if we are unable to move, I am going to set up our deck in a way that violates all strata regulations!
Off for coffee with a friend, and then I have havoc to wreak. Have a good weekend, everyone, and stay warm and dry.

  8. Debg March 14, 2026 / 12:38 pm

Griffey and Ichi are beautiful. And prepared. Most cats don’t think that far ahead.

Love hearing people’s good news and fun plans. Hopefully painful situations and illnesses will clear up quickly–hugs and healing purrs from everyone at my place.

My good news–I *finally* got my will signed, witnessed, and notarized. That was a job of work. It helps to have all your beneficiaries’ legal names before you start, because otherwise you have to go back and change everything. Free Will’s tools made the process much simpler, if only I had gathered all the data first! It turns out that employees at the UPS store will not only notarize but serve as witnesses. That was helpful, because practically everyone I know in Colorado was a beneficiary, so they couldn’t witness.

Sounds like we’re all dealing with topsy turvy weather. In addition to constantly changing temps here in Colorado, the air feels really toxic because of wildfires in Nebraska. I didn’t shut my windows in time, so the smoke smell permeated my condo. Either I’ve got a mild cold, or the smoke is affecting my respiratory system. Going back to bed soon. It’s not going to be a productive weekend.

Lovely kitties! We have a “cat sharpener” just like that. That’s how husband said it was advertised, anyway.

  10. SoccerSue March 14, 2026 / 4:02 pm

As with football, I’m not enough of a baseball fan to watch a team lose, but I’ll definitely support the Mariners when they’re winning, haha! And Griffey and Ichi are adorable.

The appliance revolt continues at our house. We just replaced the fridge last month, and yesterday when I went to put a load in the washing machine, the door broke almost all the way off (some chunks of plastic had been coming off, but this time a big one came off and the door was barely hanging by the hinges). We’ve never really liked this set-it was a replacement thru a home warranty and they gave us a cheap set, obviously- but I wasn’t financially planning to make another big purchase so soon (we’ve also recently bought a new bed and adjustable base). We went to the same, locally-owned appliance store where we bought the fridge, and had the same salesman., who gave us some decent discounts as repeat customers. They offer 6 month interest free financing as well, so we went ahead and bought a new cooktop too, since that was going to be the next purchase and this store is 45 min away from home. That will give us some time to pay off the other recent purchases, and still get the new ones paid off by the 6 month mark (34% interest should be illegal, by the way).

Hope everyone has a good weekend!
