Certainly a bold choice for a Saturday morning but I love how the red makes his coloring pop.
Now that the heat has dropped into more normal temps, I can finally do some stuff this weekend. Today is haircut and thrift store shopping. After running errands tomorrow, I may go to the museums. They have a few new exhibits that sound interesting, including photos from Cecil Beaton. Well off to get my exercise in by swimming laps in the pool. Have a good weekend all.
Glad things have cooled down. It’s been so long since I lived in southern California–I remember warm but not usually hot days. But that’s all changed now.
Lovely contrast of red and black/white in this photo. I really need to go get my glasses done. The re-ordered lenses came in on Monday but they closed early for the holiday and I didn’t get the message until after 3:00, and I really just didn’t feel like going after work during the week. I was off yesterday but I wasn’t feeling well so I didn’t go. So I really need to do it today. With any luck the sunglasses I ordered last Saturday will come in today…? Also need to get some chores done and clean up the mess that is my kitchen.
The dogs were good again. And maybe haunted.
Koda’s sit is just extra fancy.
(Get your tissues out; you can probably guess who #1 is. 🐕)

lol…after I posted, I read today’s WeRateDogs email with the subject “It’s a big anniversary Brent”:
A whole decade ago — several lifetimes by human or dog standards — someone on Twitter was confused by our very scientific rating system. A man named Brant claimed it “doesn’t even make any sense” to give dogs a 12/10.
Our rebuttal?
“they’re good dogs Brent”
Fortunately, Brant rolled with the punches and took the joke, even wearing the “they’re good dogs Brent” merch we sent him. He got a dog about two years later, bringing the whole thing full circle.
In honor of 10 years of defending good dogs, we’re releasing a “they’re good dogs Brent” bumper sticker.

I saved this email so I could share the same message! I laughed so hard.
…and ten minutes after my first post I got a text that my sunglasses are in. Yay!
Fingers crossed that the new lenses are better. (I don’t think that was the cause of my headache yesterday but it certainly didn’t help.)
Good luck with all the new lenses.
Ditto!
Ooh, the Red Room…did anyone else immediately think of ‘Jane Eyre’? I was in Haworth on Tuesday. Sadly I had to cancel my four-night stay, but having already bought a train ticket I didn’t want to waste the money so had a day out instead.
Last Sunday I returned to Pateley Bridge in an effort to learn more about my 3xgreat grandfather Thomas Parkinson, blacksmith and property tycoon of the nearby village of Bewerley. Sadly I don’t know the addresses of any of his six houses. There is an old house called Blacksmith’s Cottage but I’ve no idea if there’s any connection. Back in Pateley I revisited St Cuthbert’s churchyard and found the graves of another set of 4xgreat grandparents, William Richmond (1788-1844) and Ann Robinson Richmond (1781-1828) “of Church Green”. Church Green is at the top of a hill overlooking Pateley and the site of the now-ruined church of St Mary’s. There are also dozens of late 18th/early 19th century graves including those of Ninian and Jane Proctor, who until recently I thought were my 5x great grandparents; however, it turned out that their granddaughter Sarah was the second wife of Joseph Parkinson and I’m descended from his first wife Mary Ann, who died at the age of 26.
There was a bit of drama at the end of my visit when what should have been the 4.20 bus home broke down en route and a replacement didn’t turn up until 6.30, but otherwise it was a great day out!
What a lovely exploring kind of day! I envy you.
Just below the ruins of St Mary’s there’s a modern cemetary with a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. I sat on a bench there to eat my packed lunch and was swarmed by horseflies and wasps. The parishioners must have been relieved when the old church was abandoned because it’s a hard slog uphill from the town centre!
Just 5 thoughts? I see I wasn’t the only one not feeling good yesterday.
Well, now there are six…
(okay, seven including this one)
Hope you’re on the mend, Georgiana.
OK let me explain I did not feel well on Friday and I got up late this morning thinking it was Sunday, looked at the site and thought “Oh I missed open thread yesterday” and was surprised that there was only 5 post 😂 I’ve gone though all the post now.
Love the contrasts in this photo. Alice Shortcake, I thought of Twin Peaks–what does that say about me?
It’s an exciting day today: I’m picking up what I hope to be my new (to me) car! Yesterday (a day off) I had errands all over the Front Range trying to figure out what to do now that my Ioniq 6 lease has gone month to month. It turns out, EVs are absolutely perfect for me, but leasing is not. Once you start leasing, you have to keep leasing unless you’re independently wealthy: you don’t have a vehicle for trade-in. So I found a lightly used Nissan Leaf that I could afford to buy, and I can return it within 10 days if necessary. I’ll have two vehicles this week, while I test out the Leaf.
Taking off Monday too, for my birthday.
Hugs to you all.
Good luck with the car! My last two cars were leases but I bought my current car (which I’ve had for eight years now).
I would love an electric car but I don’t have anywhere to plug it in. They passed a rule a couple years ago that we can have a charger installed (not sure how that would work, though, or where it goes; don’t know if anyone has done it) but if we sell and the next owner doesn’t want it we have to have it removed. There are a few electric cars in the complex and they use extension cords to plug in, but they are in townhouses with an outlet outside by the front door (they also have hose hookups). I live in a second-floor one-level unit with no outside outlet, so even that wouldn’t work for me.
I can get by charging my car once a week, or at least I could with the Ioniq, because I don’t drive that much. The Leaf has less range. There’s a fast public charger about 1/4 mile away, which I rarely use. There’s free slow charging available at work–I just hook up and let the car charge all day. I don’t have any charging devices in my condo’s garage. Most EVs come with plug-in adapters for household use, though charging takes foooorrrrrreeeeevvvvver. I only tried it once.
My situation is unusual, though–not much driving, no long trips, free charging right next to where I work.
I don’t have charging options at or near work. My commute is about 15 miles one way for my usual route (a bit longer on my secondary route, which I mostly only use if the weather is bad). I assume there are places near where I live but the closest that I know for sure is a Wawa about 2 miles away. I don’t know how fast they are.
It’s a cool Saturday morning, and him/herself in the red room looks quite impressive.
I’m feeling oddly numb this morning, and I can’t quite figure out why. Two weeks ago, we made plans to visit the property we are hoping to move to, a 25 acre B&B farm situation, where we would live and help. Plans were for tomorrow. Yesterday, hubby got a call we have been waiting over six months for, an appointment for an MRI. The hospital doing the MRI does them only on Saturday and Sunday and they had a cancellation for tomorrow. He accepted the appointment, obviously, and we’re thrilled it finally came, but that means we had to cancel our day trip for tomorrow. I’ve been waiting so long for this appointment, but I was so looking forward to this trip, and now I’m full of conflicting emotions. Typical me.
Off for a busy day of errands. I plan to do some baking next week, now that it’s cooler. Banana bread, blueberry muffins and sausage rolls. Hungry just thinking about it.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Got home last night after a three week tour through Austria, Germany and The Netherlands with my 86 year old mother and my 90 year old uncle! They proudly call themselves the “Super Seniors” and this was a long awaited and much planned for bucket list trip. Sadly my father and aunt passed away before we were able to make this trip happen, but we all (with my sister and her husband coming along as well) had a remarkable experience together. It’s one for he family history books!
Among the highlights (which include Cologne Cathedral and the Rijksmuseum) were the Dachshund Museum in Regensburg, Germany and the Kattenkabinet Cat Portrait Museum in Amsterdam. From the cute to the sublime… Now time to relax, drink coffee and unpack! Will pop over to my mom’s place this afternoon to help her do likewise.
Please please tell me that the dachshund museum was full of dog-related stuff. It sounds like a delightful trip!
Yes it was! Among the many reasons to go to Regensburg!
I heard about this the other day then was reminded while listening to Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me. The Girl Scouts are making Dog Cookies this year! They’re blueberry muffin flavored and shaped like Girl Scout patches.

(I looked up the ingredients and they say “not for human consumption.” The first ingredient is “dried bakery product”…whatever that is.*)
*Google sez: Dried bakery product is an official pet food ingredient made from recycled, unsold, or expired human baked goods like bread, cookies, cakes, and crackers that are ground into a coarse powder.
